Mentsuyu Sauce

Mentsuyu is a Japanese sauce used for dipping Soba or Somen noodles and tempura. Can also be used on steamed or boiled vegetables.

Ingredients (for 2)

  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 3 tbsp mirin
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp katsuobushi
  • 1/2 cup water


  • Take a saucepan and add all the ingredients
  • Bring slowly to a boil, stirring from time to time, and then remove from heat when it reaches boiling point
  • Let the sauce cool completely in the pan
  • Strain and discard the Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes)

  • The sauce can be stored in fridge for 1-2 weeks
