Mattar Paneer

Popular North Indian recipe made with paneer (cottage cheese) and peas. The flavor of this recipe is not supposed to be too spicy so we use green chilies and no garam masala powder…

Ingredients (for 2)

  • 1 cup cottage cheese (about 5 oz or 150 gr)
  • 2 cups peas
  • 1/2 can tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp cilantro
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1/4 chili pepper
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/4 onion
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt & black pepper


  • Slice the paneer or cottage cheese into small cubes
  • Finely chop the onions and the garlic cloves
  • Heat the oil in a saucepan and stir fry the paneer, together with onion and garlic, at high heat for a couple of minutes
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ginger (grated), coriander seeds, peas, water and a pinch of salt
  • Cover and simmer at low heat for about 20-25 minutes, until the peas are tender (cooking time for peas vary depending on whether you use fresh or frozen)
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and green chilies just before serving

Best Served With

Boiled potatoes, rice or a warm naan.
