Keftedes Meatballs

A traditional Greek recipe with many potential variations, we tried to keep it simple and to stick to the original one!

Ingredients (for 2)

  • 1 cup ground beef (about 200 gr or 7 oz)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices sandwich bread
  • 1 tbsp mint
  • 1 tbsp anise liquor
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp wheat flour
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • salt & black pepper

  • Dice the bread in small cubes, put it in a bowl and soak it with the anise liquor
  • Boil the egg in hot water (it will take about 7 minutes)
  • In a small sauce pan sauté in olive oil the minced garlic and diced onions; when translucent add them to the bowl
  • Add the ground beef to the bowl, the finely chopped mint, oregano and the egg coarsely chopped; season with salt and pepper
  • Mix well all ingredients with a spoon or fork
  • Shape the meat into small balls with your hands and dust with some wheat flour
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and sauté the meatballs until well browned on all sides (for about 10 minutes at medium heat)
  • Arrange the Keftedes on a serving plate and serve hot!
