Baklavá is a very sweet pastry made with phyllo dough and honey. If you traveled Greek or Middle East you must have tried it once!
Ingredients (for 2)
- 12 sheets phyllo pastry
- 1/2 cup walnuts
- 4 tbsp white sugar
- 4 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup almonds
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 lemon
Directions
- Preheat oven to 300 °F (150 °C)
- First off, prepare the pastry: finely ground walnuts and almonds and combine them into a large bowl with nutmeg, 1/3 of sugar and ½ of cinnamon
- Butter a baking pan and start to place one sheet of phyllo pastry after the other, continuing brushing each sheet of phyllo with butter until you use half of the sheets
- Sprinkle about ½ or slightly more of the nut and sugar mixture over the phyllo; top the mixture with 2 sheets of phyllo, buttered
- Continue alternating nut mixture with 2 sheets buttered phyllo until both are used up, ending with phyllo; brush the top with butter
- With a sharp knife, trim off any excess of phyllo and cut lengthwise through the top layer only, thus creating diamond-shaped pieces
- Bake for 1 hour or until golden
- In the mean time, prepare the syrup: in a small saucepan combine the remaining 2/3 of sugar, a slice of lemon, water and a cinnamon stick (if not available use half of the powder in the ingredients)
- Bring to boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes
- Remove from heat, remove the slice of lemon and the cinnamon stick and pour slowly the honey, stirring constantly; let cool
- Remove the pastry from the oven when done and cut into diamonds with a sharp knife
- Pour immediately the warm syrup over the hot pastry and let cool before serving!
